Basi's universe is characterized by surreal elements. Each one of her paintings is an introspective view into her dreams where any sense of space and time has been lost.
She was born in Mendoza, Veracruz and started painting in 1964 up until her death in 1989. She also wrote two books "Bassi, prohibido pronunciar su nombre" (Bassi, forbidden to mention her name) published in 1978 and a book of stories "Alfolí", co written by the poet Bertha Rosalía González Aragón.
In 1990 her work was added to the "Museo Iconografico del Quijote" in Guanajuato. In 1992 the government of Veracruz started awarding the Sofia Bassi Medal in her honor. In 1996 she was added to the Jose Luis Cuevas Museum and "El Color del Aire" a previously unpublished book was released. She received many awards throughout her life. Some of her most celebrated were a Diploma by the Human Rights Comity in NYC, Prefeto di Terni award in Italy, Diploma by the Guatemalan government, among others.
