Margaret Deborah Cookesley was born in London, England in 1844. She took the name Murray upon mariage and as such became a well known landscape painter very interested in the orientalist movement of the time. With courage, she visited the middle east to learn the culture picture the sights first hand. Her subjects were usually Egyptian scenes and her favorite techniques oil and watercolor. During the years of 1884-1889 she saw her career flourish with exhibitions in many major galleries in England including the Royal Academy and the Society of Women Artists.
